Silver_Award_Starburst_HRDo you want to learn the basics of how to earn the Silver Award? Attend this class to learn the prerequisites, guidelines and outcomes. Girl Scouts in grades 6 – 8 are eligible to attend. Contact the instructor at jbg3gs@gmail.com with your name, email, phone number, and troop number. Priority will be given to 7th and 8th graders. Girls who have not worked on the aMaze Journey need not apply. Sis. Kesha will be attending this workshop.

On Your Own: Girl Scout Energy Fair, Jan 31

Renewable-Energy-300x297On January 31, 2015, environmental leaders from the Washington, DC area will gather at Maret School to teach children, teens, and adults how to become environmental leaders. This gathering – an Energy Fair – will take place in the Old Gym from 10AM to 12:30PM. The purpose of the Energy Fair is to motivate school-age children and adults to protect our environment through conservation and sustainable practices, efficient and alternative uses of energy, and eco-friendly practices, products, and services. The Energy Fair is free and open to the public. There will be more than 20 exhibitors, hands-on activities for kids, a solar oven activity, a home energy workshop, free prizes every half hour, and the opportunity to win a free home-energy audit. Free parking is available. If you attend, you will learn about:

  • Solar energy options
  • Organic gardening
  • Using rain barrels for storm water and energy conservation
  • Home energy audits
  • Green architecture and design
  • Home weatherization and reduction in energy consumption and cost
  • Conscious low-carbon cooking
  • Container gardening
  • How to keep food warm without electricity
  • Ways to reduce energy waste
  • And more!

Reminder: Junior Drawing Badge Workshop This Saturday, Jan 10

junior_drawing_largeJuniors will work with an artist to complete their Drawing badge at Greenbelt Community Center, Saturday, 10 January, 2015, 10:15AM – 3PM. To earn their Junior Drawing badge, girls will learn techniques to make their drawings even better. They will experiment with different materials, and learn about shading, perspective and other skills that graphic artists use. No experience necessary!

Girls should wear comfortable clothing and vest, and bring a bag lunch. No tagalongs. Because this is a pre-paid event there are no refunds.
