Sojourn to Savannah in 2017

julietteGordonLowBWAsalaamu Alaikum,

Sis Kesha is gathering a group to Sojourn to Savannah in 2017. This trip is open to girls who will be Seniors, Cadettes or Juniors in 2017.

Savannah is the birth place of Girl Scouts in America. Sojourners will visit the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, visit the first Girl Scouts headquarters, and participate in birthplace programing,

Juliette Gordon Low (October 31, 1860 – January 17, 1927) was the founder of Girl Scouts of the USA, with the help of Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting Movement. Baden-Powell and Low shared love of travel and support for the Girl Guides. Low joined the Girl Guide movement, forming a group of Girl Guides in Scotland in 1911. In 1912 Low returned to the United States, forming the first American Girl Guide troop in Savannah, Georgia in 1912. In 1915, the Girl Guides in the USA became Girl Scouts and Low became the first president. She stayed active until the time of her death. Her birthday, October 31, is celebrated by the Girl Scouts as “Founder’s Day”. Watch this pictorial history of Low.

Girls will be earning their ticket to this trip by selling cookies and participating in troop fundraisers. Girls must participate in three Annual Cookie Sales to qualify to attend plus two of the three additional fundraisers that will be announced in 2015. We will need adults to attend. Adult volunteers must pay their own way.

On February 21, 2015, there will be a meeting for all girls and adults interested in sojourning to Savannah. We will provide more information, answer questions, girls & adults can sign up, and adults will receive the payment schedule.

Let’s Sojourn to Savannah in 2017!

Troop 3480 Needs World Thinking Day Coordinator

worldThinkingDay2015AwardAsalaamu Alaikum

World Thinking Day is a Girl Scout tradition that occurs each year on February 22, when girls participate in activities and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries. World Thinking Day not only gives girls a chance to celebrate international friendships, it is also a reminder that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in nearly 150 countries. Our Service Unit Thinking Day event will be either February 22 or March 6, 2015.

The coordinator will work with girls and troop leaders to:

  • select a country of interest,
  • learn about the country through activities, research, presentations or trips,
  • organize the troop presentation, which includes SWAPS, food & drink, and a short presentation

We need one or more parents to help with the planning and execution of the World Thinking Day event or the troop will not participate this year. Please email Sis. Kesha at keshabdulm [at] gmail [dot] com or Sis. Alia at alia [dot] kemet [at] gmail [dot] com if you are interested or have additional questions.

Girl Scout Cookie Season Begins December 19!

girlScoutCookieZoneGirl Scout trips, badges, ceremonies, activities, and programs cost money and selling cookies is every troop’s most important fundraiser. Money from our annual cookie sales helps off-set the cost of these activities.

Did you know our troop receives $0.60 per box of cookies sold? That means every 100 boxes sold raises $60. Last year only 39 of our 110 PGMA Girl Scouts sold cookies. This year we need every girl to sell at least 10 boxes of cookies, help sell at our cookie booth, or both. Each level (Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors) will have at least one booth sale. We cannot do this without parent volunteers.

Parents, we need you to:

  • Attend the Cookie Information Meeting on Friday, December 19, at 6:15PM
  • Help your daughter(s) sell cookies
  • Pick up your daughter(s)’ cookie order
  • Turn in all money for cookies on time
  • Optional – volunteer to chaperone girls at cookie booths
  • Optional – help pick up our troop’s cookie order on February 19, 2015

Girls Scouts, we need you to:

  • Set a goal for how many cookies you want to sell
  • Sell cookies to your family, friends, teachers, neighbors, parent’s coworkers, etc.
  • Remind your parents to turn in your cookie orders & cookie payments on time
  • Optional – volunteer to sell at a troop cookie booth

More details will be given at the Cookie Information Meeting, Friday, December 19, 6:15PM, inshaAllah.
