Reminder: Troop Meeting Tomorrow, Feb 10

The next regularly scheduled troop meeting will be this Friday, February 10, 2017, 6:15 – 7:45PM, inshaAllah. Please be timely. Arrivals after 6:45PM are disruptive to troop meetings and strongly discouraged.

BROWNIES

  • Brownies will be beginning their WOW Take Action Project by making fleece blanket throws to assist the Native American Indian’s at Standing Rock North/South Dakota.
  • Brownies will also be making swaps and discussing their World Thinking Day project on the United Arab Emirates.
  • Turn in permission forms for the Inventor and Home Scientist badge workshops at the Chesapeake Children’s Museum, Mar 18

JUNIORS

  • Juniors will work on their Get Moving! Take Action project. Sis. Amina, facility manager at PGMA, will talk with the girls about setting up a recycling program at the masjid inshaAllah.

MULTIPLE LEVELS

  • Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors will get ready for the SU 22-6 World Thinking Day celebration with a prep meeting at PGMA THIS SATURDAY, February 11, 1 – 4PM. Daisies are not presenting a country and will only attend the celebration to learn about other countries. Again, Daisies do not need to attend the prep meeting. Following are the countries each level will be presenting:
    • United Arab Emirates (Brownies)
    • Uganda (Juniors)
    • England (Cadettes)
    • Madagascar (Seniors & Ambassadors)
  • Turn in permission forms for Girl Scout Day at the Newseum, Mar 4

PARENTS

  • Pay your Girl Scout’s troop dues: $45 for Daisies, $60 for all other levels. If needed, dues can be paid in installments. Dues pay for badges and pins, help supplement some activities/trips, and also help support the troop web site, and other troop expenses. (Parents pay for fun patches.) For financial assistance contact your Girl Scout’s troop leader.

Registered Girl Scouts have access to four fantastic sleep-away camps: Camp Coles Trip, Camp May Flather, Camp Potomac Woods and Camp Winona. Each camp is unique and offers a variety of activities like swimming, kayaking, making crafts, hiking, cooking over an open fire, and best of all, finding your best friend. At Girl Scout camp, all girls are treated with respect and encouraged to be their awesome selves! Registration is now open.

Girl Scout Day at the Newseum, Mar 4

New This Year:

  • Show off your best singing voice with our karaoke Girl Scouts Sing! Sing songs by famous female artists, as well as former Girl Scouts such as Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey and Sheryl Crow.
  • Join a Women Who Rock tour to discover how women have made gains – and a name – by speaking out through music and marches in the world of politics and social movements.
  • Take a break and get active in our Funspot game room! Play mega-sized games of Connect Four and Jenga. Challenge your friends in a game of bean bag toss!
  • Discover the various ways that young women have used the five freedoms of the First Amendment to fight for their beliefs in our self-guided Girl Power Scavenger Hunt.
  • Bring your camera and capture a selfie with a life-sized cutout of Nellie Bly, a pioneer for women in journalism, in our Photo Op.

Annual Favorites:

  • Show what you know about the Girl Scouts, women’s history and current events in the Newseum’s popular NewsMania game show.
  • Race across a giant game board using historic front pages in Front Page Frenzy game that uses historic front pages featuring accomplishments of famous women.
  • Learn how women’s suffrage activists used their First Amendment rights to bring attention to their cause in Votes for Women program.
  • In the Express Yourself station, decorate a tote bag, picture frame or patch button.
  • Pack your imagination and head off on a Nellie Bly Global Scavenger Hunt in the Newseum’s exhibits. Travel through time to learn about the different ways of communicating, news around the world and the life of journalist Elizabeth Cochrane, aka Nellie Bly. Download the hunt and print it in advance.

Girl Scouts should wear their full uniform and hijab and bring lunch money. Parents and tagalongs are welcome to attend but must buy their tickets online or at the door.

newseumLogoThe Newseum is thrilled to welcome Girl Scouts to a special day of events created just for them.

There’s plenty to participate in:

  • Show what you know about the Girl Scouts, women’s history and current events in the Newseum’s popular NewsMania game show.
  • Scour historic front pages for certain items while racing across a giant game board in Front Page Frenzy.
  • Learn how women’s suffrage activists used their First Amendment rights to bring attention to their cause.
  • Attend the Girl Scouts’ Conversations of Consequence.
  • Decorate a tote bag, button or slap bracelet celebrating your right to free expression.
  • Go on an adventure with the Nellie Bly Global Scavenger Hunt.
  • Join a gallery talk on women in journalism.

Girls should dress appropriately for the weather and wear their vests. Also, bring a bag lunch, Metro fare and money to spend on food, patches or goodies. Parents are needed to chaperone. Girls and tagalongs under age six (6) are free.
